Who is SMARTbite?

About the Company

Atlanta Georgia based Scientific Intake was founded in 2003 to develop safe and clinically proven proprietary medical devices for the benefit of individuals suffering from excess weight. Our mission is to provide non-invasive, easily tolerated and affordable solutions that complement broad disease management and weight loss strategies.

SMARTbite ( SMART stands for Sensor Monitored Alimentary Restriction Therapy) is a patented, non-surgical, clinically validated bariatric medical device for overweight and Class I (mild) obesity (BMI 27-35) utilizing dietary restriction at the oral cavity. SMARTbite was created in response to research linking rapid eating with excess weight and the unmet need for a safe, effective method of dietary restriction among this growing population, who have become a growing global health concern and represent over 2 billion people worldwide (World Health Organization). They can benefit from weight loss but existing approaches have been unsuccessful. A device-based approach for these patients could be the solution since they are not candidates for surgery.

Working with many of the world's leading obesity experts, Scientific Intake has established the efficacy of SMARTbite's multiple modes of action in IRB approved, randomized, controlled clinical trials. These studies have either been published or are currently in press at peer reviewed scientific journals( see research section). In 2009, Scientific Intake achieved ISO 13485 status, designation as Non Significant Risk by the USFDA and Class I Medical Device registration in the European Union, Canada and Australia. Several other countries are pending.

Scientific Intake recently began commercializing SMARTbite in Europe and Canada beginning in the Greater Toronto area with plans to expand throughout Canada in 2010.
